Treatment for BED can involve different types of therapy or medications to help get binging under control and treat any underlying causes or symptoms. For example, one study in 15 people found that eating a high-protein alcohol withdrawal timeline: symptoms to expect during the first 72 hours breakfast reduced levels of ghrelin to a greater extent than eating a high carb breakfast (22). In many cases, these feelings can be chronic, and serve as drivers of the disordered behaviors involved in each condition. While impulse control is frequently a problem for people with both BED and AUD, alcohol can work to further lower inhibitions, leading to more intense or frequent binging episodes. Binging episodes are short and intense, often involving extreme behaviors and frequently characterized by the loss of a sense of control. Or by depressing the gag reflex, which puts a person who has passed out at risk of choking on their own vomit.

What is known is that alcohol, despite being a calorie-rich substance, can cause a spike in chemical signals in the brain related to intense hunger.  This can explain why many people end up at a diner or raiding the fridge after a night of drinking, but it can also serve as a potentially triggering factor for someone who struggles with binge eating behaviors. Impulse control refers to someone’s ability to refrain from or stop participating in certain behaviors. Like the propensity to develop addiction, impulse control is also highly influenced by genetics.  And a lack of impulse control is another commonly-shared quality in people with disordered drinking and eating habits of all types. Still, there are some common factors that can put someone at a higher risk of experiencing both binge eating disorder and alcohol use disorder.
Finally, indirect effects of the exogenous variables on the binge drinking factor were examined. As shown in Table 3, emotional eating, external eating, and food addiction showed positive, statistically significant relations with binge drinking, whereas the relationship with restrained eating was negative. So far, literature has indicated that binge drinking can predict an increase in binge eating and fat intake in young people [24,31]. However, a line of animal research has attempted to study the inverse relationship, suggesting that binge eating and fat intake may also play a role in the development of binge drinking . These studies have explored the relationship, showing that both binge eating and fat intake predict an increase in subsequent ethanol overconsumption in adolescent mice . However, the directionality of this relationship has hardly been studied, and the results are inconclusive .

In conclusion, this study contributes towards a deeper understanding of the relationship and co-occurrence between BD and BE in adolescents and young people. Through a review of all studies carried out to date, we observed a discrete relationship between both binge behaviors which suggest that more variables mediating BD and BE must be considered to shed light on this aspect. As a consequence, better prevention and personalized treatment approaches could be developed for vulnerable adolescents and young people who suffer from alcohol abuse and/or eating disorders.
